@ FFgenerations
While it probably feels like going mid (or maybe carry) are the more 'impactful' roles that help you win more often, playing strong supports well is likely a better / more consistent way of carrying games, at least in the lower mmr brackets, like under 5k or whatever. Assuming that both teams are roughly equal in skill with you being the last variable, as a support you can ensure that your team has more map presence, more space to farm, and more kill opportunities than if you were playing most other roles - there are exceptions depending on lineups etc, but anyway. Assuming your mid / carry aren't completely awfulbad, a well played VS, Rubick, WD and the likes will allow them to secure the necessary farm, as well as give your offlane some security against dives, then carry your team through the mid/lategame with vision and teamfight initiations / saves; and if one guy on your team IS in fact terrible - well, playing a carry won't make more impact anyway. If anything, being on a support is still more likely to save you from disaster as if your mid or safelaner is very bad, you might still be able to give him enough farm to rightclick stuff down in lategame, whereas if your supports aren't good, you will end up with underfarmed cores that are worth nothing in the end, and end up dying to some mirana ult or smoke ganks that you didn't see coming because eventually your mid SF ran out of space to place wards and no one else did it.
Also, support is the role that helps you improve your awareness and overall game sense more than anything else does; and those are the things that really make you a better player, much more so than practicing individual hero mechanics does. Last but not least, generally people aren't very eager to pick support in pubs so you're probably contributing to having good lane and team compositions by playing one.
As for your comments about Puck... He can be a very potent lane bully and leaving his lane at 6 is often the wrong thing to do. Denying the enemy midlaner farm can be just as important as getting a kill in sidelanes and his kill potential at 6 is pretty high. Dagon vs scythe is incredibly situational. Both (as well as silence) can be viable item choices, but it depends massively on the lineup you're playing against. You have to look at how farmed and how tanky your potential targets are, how many disables / initiators you have, are there bkbs coming on enemy cores, etc. You've got plenty of midgame impact as Puck regardless whether you have a dagon or not; if you end up coming into fights with a scythe and feeling like there isn't enough dps to see what you wanted dead actually go down, the problem might be that you simply aren't engaging at the right place and time, not that you don't have enough dps. Puck is indeed squishy but he's also pretty much the highest survivability hero in the game when played right. You should absolutely be able to play aggressive on a Puck, just you have to keep an eye on your and your enemy cooldowns to know when it is safe and when it isn't to do so. Also, dying to secure a kill on Clockwerk (or really any other hero) is a very bad mentality to have in pubs :p you should make it a priority to stay alive for yourself unless it's like a 60+ minute game and you know with complete certainty that your suicide will be the one action that takes down that 40k networth PL that would have survived otherwise. It's too easy to convince yourself that your death was okay because you know, you got a kill back for it anyway, and that kind of thinking can really stifle your progress and dull your game sense.

sorry that you wrote so much for me, but what i meant was playing heroes like puck in a support/jungling role (ie less farm/xp) seems to suck. i had thought that i was good enough player to do things like that , but for some heroes i cant pull it off. the reason i was doing it was because no1 in 3k mmr knows how to double/triple pull and so i thought just by doing that with any random hero i can get a good advantage for the team. but it doesnt work out as well as i thought (in solo all pick, random heroes/lanes)
ill tryu to read you other bit in a bit
edit: yeah my clock is like 70% over 100 games so dont read too much into what i say there. i seem to know how to play that hero to gain great advantage (much easier hero of course). puck on the other hand i have won like 5 games out of 30 or whatever it is. theres something really wrong there. anyway im going to try a few games today and see if i learnt anything

4750 Guys, What rating will All Pick Sniper fail me?!
|
Yeah good post and update.
Enjoyed reading it and too bad you didn't reach the 5k's , I still keep trying death prophet mid but in china the language barrier is even worse.

Up 100 guys!
@Drakan To be honest dude I never expected it to be really easy. I'm still steadily progressing which is good. I have bad days of course but it should be an easy road to 5k, Leaderboards are a different story.
I've been mostly alternating between radiant sniper and dire storm because I like those heroes and they're keeping it fun.
Mini Update: We're sitting at 4825 now. It has been pretty smooth sailing since I broke out of that horrible 4500 hump i was stuck on. The easiest games have been ones where I'm the "low rated player" in the game. My initial impression or idea was that it would be easier to win a game where the whole game was low MMR, but it turns out in my case at least that being the OP low rated player in a leaderboard type game is MUCH easier wins. Here is a snapshot of my Dotabuff.
God have mercy on my morphling... We're going to pretend that record is the account's previous owners fault haha.(No seriously I can't play this hero) I've yet to really bust out the Goofy Shadow Fiend in solo much. I don't think he's really suited for solo Q though. Anyway that's all for now guys. Wish me luck!
And the link In case anyone wants to be nosey! Dotabuff

why do you think you are so shit at morphling? is it something you perhaps want to work on (unranked)?

I introduced my friend to dota recently and hes making his approach to 4k mmr with no dota 1 or HoN experience. Basically I would introduce him to a hero give him his primary objective item and skill builds and let him go wild. SO here is his dotabuff before I say any more. http://dotabuff.com/players/131250425
Lol way to turn the poor guy into your personal support bitch Do you make him play support WK as well?
JK I get the reasoning but I still find his most played hero list funny given the circumstances.
On a serious note I liked your approach and I guess his #dedication, cause reaching 4k mmr without previous experience is good (although not having bad habits may be a a benefit for him with someone really good teaching the guy)
heh I'm about 3.5k mmr after playing this game for 2y (1400 dota 2 games), and after having played a bit of dota 1 and the superior moba. This guy is 4k after a 3rd of my games. Make him lose plz k thx.
or maybe you should tell him to come teach me how to play lol
@ff-generations if you're US we can play together and perhaps help each other a bit, just pm me

Why do you like Agh's so much on QoP? I like it too but i have a hard time deciding between getting it or Orchid. Any tips on when one is better than the other? Or do you pretty much just use it to farm. Also, I have been skipping treads and going straight for Orchid after the usually boots, bottle, stick, and null. Have you tried that build at all, any feedback?
|
Aghs is good if you have void or tree or something. Qop is VERY MUCh my fuck around in party Q and have fun hero right now so please don't take any of those builds seriously. I don't think orchid is very good on her right now in competitive though because the meta is all these beefy pieces of shit like tide etc, but in the end this is just my opinion and it certainly has its uses.. Thanks for asking though!
Edit: Update!
It's getting really hard guys. Averaging +1 game every day slowly increasing. Uhh plus side is that I'm starting to Q into a lot of friends and stuff because of the higher rating. Starting to worry I'm going to slow to a halt before hitting the 5400 required for leaderboards. As far as observations go I've seen a lot of leaderboard players just blowing games open on support... I don't think there is anything at all to the idea that you "HAVE" to play a core role move up in mmr. Based on my observations that seems to be total bullshit.

wait im confused waht was ur original mmr before u started smurfing
|
On my main? I had never played solo really I think I calibrated at like 4500. I just had played TONS of amateur Dota and scrims between then and now. The account I chose to smurf on I was 3600. This post is as much about me learning to succeed Solo Q as it is about anything. Playing pubs is so much different than "Competitive" Dota it's not even funny. Nevertheless it's pretty clear team experience has benefited me cause the climb thus far has been fairly easy without many obstacles. I'm still way in the dark about how some people have gone nearly undefeated to this rating, I've played my fair share of what seemed like unwinnable games
RIP 70% storm wins though we're sitting at 68%

Your steam icon is mega-adorable.
PS: I Spy an "Autism_2000" on your friends list. While there are a lot of people with that name, there's only one on dotabuff with that picture. Do you know the guy?
I'm curious cuz I may or may not have lost to him while playing with aui on a smurf LOL
|
I'll tell him to get in this thread when he is online :D!
|
Well, it was months ago and quite a whatever game but we found it highly amusing.
