Preface This is a Follow-Up to my previous post which detailed the beginning of my attempt bring a smurf account from 3600 all the way up to the leaderboards. Again I'm Goofy and WE WILL MAKE IT!
So How's it Going!?
We started two weeks ago, and posted the first blog I want to say like a couple days into this challenge I prepared for myself. I'm going to lay it all out there and be completely honest in this post. First of all this is where we stand with the account right now.
Wins and losses here and there, I even went negative a day or two. I'll say now that I'm not happy with my progression and definitely talk more about that in a bit.
Whats Gone Wrong?
A major Part of the problem right now is I'm just not that much significantly better than the people in these games. 4700 players have very good games and it's not like I can just stomp everybody anymore.
But... This is where I fucking complain I guess. Here are my thoughts on some issues I faced in the pub all pick metagame. from 4400-4700
This ASSHOLE! Before this last patch every game was Invoker and I was starting to lose my mind laning against him every game. The way pubs play Invoker is so utterly frustratingly defensive, and they all do this thing where i they rush orchid on QW and your fucking teammates just die every time they Ghost Walk. The cold snap nerf has helped a bit and this seems to be dying but the patches have given rise to another menace.
Dear god the IMMORTAL humanity. First of all your pub teammates are not warding ancients so you can forget that shit was ever a thought in your god damn mind. While you're at it forget about those 20-30 minute Death Prophet games I was having in my last post cause Tinker is not gonna let it happen. You better hope you pub teammates don't like making one mistake and losing at 70 minutes because that is where pub tinker is taking you assuming your teammates don't commit Sudoku in march of machines before that.
Man I don't even know what to say about this one. If any hero has made me want to quit solo Q its this one for sure... I've had Miranas sit mid and try to arrow me until 8 minutes into the game. When she finally fucking gets you hopefully later than sooner your fucking teammates flame you for dying. What is this? I dont even. Who picks this shit? It is so unbelievably irritating guys I can't even explain it to you properly through text. Like you pick storm or some shit, and you're laning against huskar or od or skywrath or some equally impossible retarded bullshit and you dodge a mirana arrow. That was close you think to yourself and you keep laning managing to gain upper hand through the grace of god, and the second one comes and the third and the fourth and then it fucking hits you finally. You hang you head in shame, and just when you do spot a chat message from your jungle bloodseeker. It says "Fucking noob mid." You cry every time.
Wait what? How is Jakiro a problem to play against. Well he's not and that isn't what i mean by this one. You see I have a deep-seated love affair with playing Jakiro middle and I know I said I could put it on hold while smurfing but I just couldn't. I knew I would get trolled If i picked it, but I did it anyway. I've got a confession too. I did it four fucking times in a row on a disgustingly tilted rampage and got trolled every time... No more Kiro : ( - 100 points for Goofydor.
Repercussions! :O For most people I feel like bashing noobs or low rated players head in would be an ego boost. An oasis of sorts in the mess of ranked to make you feel better about yourself as a dota player or whatever. For me it's been quite the opposite guys. I'm down in the dumps every time I fucking lose and winning doesn't even feel good. God forbid you lose your lane in this bracket you get flamed to hell, never mind if I picked Sniper or something and I get dived they lose their fucking minds.
To be honest I think pubbing is actually making me worse at competitive Dota. I'm learning to not rely on my teamates. I'm playing extremely selfishly. Hell half the time I'm not even checking runes cause we have like no fucking vision anyway. Worst of all when It's all over with I go to sleep at night and have nightmares of endlessly dodging Mirana arrows. As the last one finally hits me I wake up in a cold sweat and I question what the fuck I'm doing to myself. I think it's cause I love this game and I've made a commitment to myself to make it. So I'm going to do just that...
The plug! Check out my stream at twitch.tv/Goofy_Dota to watch me Suffer. Warning if you tune in right now you're just going to see me editing the spelling errors and shit out of this blog

Lmao loved the post. I have the same problem with vision, as soon as I get to 4700mmr ish, the majority of the games there are no supports x.x Also the flame at this mmr, I don't think there is a single game that doesn't have someone flaming each other. Not to mention there's a fucking jungle axe/LC/doom that afk the first 10 mins every game and I just decide to get high from frustration and lose all my mmrs
But I do love this game
|
Well I guess all of this means you're not good enough to solo-carry the games anymore, which is fine.
Time to pick support.
|
Somehow I dont think that that is the answer :D
|
assuming your teammates don't commit Sudoku Seppuku (切腹).
|
I'm pretty sure he meant sudoku as a joke.

Funny, every time I play tinker I constantly have the entirety of the enemy team breathing down my neck and often have to buy my own sentry wards. Still, I don't think I've gotten travels later than 11 minutes in months, maybe even a year. Time to tinker to 5k perhaps?
|
if you're ancienting just allways start with sentry + sage mask.
it's only if there's some dipshit potm or bh that's dedicating early game to annoy you that you will be shut down

Heres a tougher game against some reasonably well known players with a lot of all chat trolling from both teams. 686136854 And here's a 27 point game for our 5kish 5 stack that we won in 12 minutes but I have no idea who our opponents are. 686136854
If you have any questions about the games let me know!

i got dived everytime from using tinker, invoker.
But i never got dived as brewmaster 3.7k scrubs for life yo.

this is pretty interesting because i think i'm good at dota but can't seem to increase my mmr from 3k. i would love someone like you to coach me (but i just deleted dota again, for the 10th time).
i tend to think that i win my lane/get ahead a large % of time but my team just doesn't listen to me and i lose anyway. my wr is like 54% (lower now i fucked around and then quit) but i think it should be a lot higher. i just can't make it higher.
i have some decent heroes, some mediocre who i think should be a LOT higher but i still lose with (like viper and sniper autowin lane -> lose game). http://dotabuff.com/players/170060212/heroes
i am 1-9 with puck and have no idea why. mechanically i was fine with him but just lost ...well 9 games in a row wtf.
i went 11-1 with timbersaw when i made the account and now im at 50% with him, wtf!!! that was better even than playing lycan!
i cant find any pleasure in playing games where i have 4% impact on whether we win or lose. i dont understand why i cant win. i cant fathom that i have such a small impact when i see people like you win like every game in fucking solo pick. if you or someone want to coach me i'll reinstall i guess and give it another go. but for a long time i dont find any pleasure in not understanding why i have such fucking low impact when i think i am a solid player and capable of fucking sick plays and clever decision making.
i think playing the same hero repeatedly helps a LOT but i dont really do that. i done it with Nyx on one account when i realised i had a 30% winrate with him over 30 games and needed to figure out what the fuck was going wrong (i concluded that going dagon first every game on nyx was giving me a 30% wr and found that going blink first was way way stronger.....still 30% wr is incredibly bad).
if i made a new acc i think i wud just play like 10 games on each hero one by one until i have like 55-60% wr with each hero. i also thought i could just play my top 10 heroes but i dont like to do that, i like to random and play everything randomly.
i guess , looking at my account, i have 24 heroes with like 1-2 games played at 0% winrate. maybe if i got those all up to 50% each my overall wr would look a bit better. and if i got my puck to 50% instead of 10%. but i dont know if the math works like that... (if i have 50% wr and increase my total games by 50 then doesn't that just bring my wr down towards 50%?? or is it that my expected wr on any given hero should be 50% so i can project wins onto the current heroes to set them at 50% wr without including losses...? how on earth do you do the math for that. it must be like "for each hero, for each game played you have 55% chance to win and 45% chance to extend number of losses by 1". so its like:
for 24 heroes .45 chance of adding 2 games to total including 1 win .2 chance of adding 4 games to total including 1 win so 24 (straight wins) + .45*24*2 + .2*24*4 = 24+22+19 = 66 games to get 24 heroes from 0-1 to 50%
that would make my score 200-184 or still 52% so it doesnt matter anyway???

I think you're obsessing over winrate way too much. It makes sense that you can dominate with timbersaw against bad players relative to your skill level but can't do so against people of your own skill level. The important thing to focus on here is your own level of play from one game to another. Honestly, a lot of your item builds are really questionable and there's significant room for improvement even outside of mechanical skill and teamwork. Just keep playing and you will get better.

I'm sure I could coach you but I spend most of my time spamming games of dota right now. I introduced my friend to dota recently and hes making his approach to 4k mmr with no dota 1 or HoN experience. Basically I would introduce him to a hero give him his primary objective item and skill builds and let him go wild. SO here is his dotabuff before I say any more.
http://dotabuff.com/players/131250425
What we're going to see here is a lot of playing the same heroes. Sandking Veno Jakiro(My love) Wraith king and Dark seer probably? I'm typing these from memory. My instructions for him were really basic but I really tried to stress with him that "Reinventing the Wheel" was the worst possible thing he could do while learning. There's plenty of time for experimentation after you get the basics of a hero down. Take DS for example, even set your mind objectives like farm the mek and use it effectively as a focus for a couple games. Now focus on doing that without dying the best we can. Now lets add the element of landing big wall vac combos. Now lets start in incorporate blink. Then next game maybe lets focus on surging the right targets in team fights. All while making sure we're not forgetting to pop that mek from game one.
A lot of people think they're above this kind of practice. I can't speak for everyone but at 3k it's safe to say you're not because I'm certainly still not. I can't tell you how many people start creating their own deviations of item builds and strategies without even understanding the mechanics of the game or WHY the STANDARD build is the STANDARD build.
(Note: Some examples of this in 3k bracket are like Raw Damage PL, Vanguard on everything etc)
I'm going to tell you honestly your builds are questionable in nearly every game I looked at on your Dotabuff. Unfortunately by questionable I mean just kind of wrong... I'm not trying to insult you here but to bring attention to the fact that maybe you're perception you have that you ALREADY do understand what to do is causing you these problems. When I learn a new hero I usually look into how it is played meticulously why it is picked. If you really love this game like a lot of us do I suggest you get back to the basics and build a strong foundation maybe even one hero at a time.

well i played 11 games of puck yesterday and won the last 3. that was a bit annoying because i couldnt tell if i'd lucked out.
i think there are some things i feel like i might be able to consider....(need another 100 games to confirm)
1) going mid REALLY helps compared to support/jungle pulling. ive been jungling a lot of heroes recently coz i found out how you pull into the 2nd and 3rd camps (literally ive never seen ANYONE do this at 3k so i never realised i should be doing it) but for some heroes this isnt good enough xp (fine for hard supports, crap for offlane/mid heroes)
2) you need to gank at 6. you cant sit around farming like other heroes. you NEED to force a gank or a push, like clock you need to make things happen (but unlike clock you have 0 solo dps and 0 tank so its way harder)
3) dagon instead of scythe gives you midgame impact otherwise you have zero dps and no impact for 30 mins
4) YOU ARE SO FUCKING SQUISHY AS FUCK. my deaths on puck are like highest on the team every game. when i play clock i dont mind dying because it always secures a kill and advantage for the team. with puck i MUST play too aggressively (coming in for rightclicks instead of hiding for longer). anyway its definitely someone to keep an eye on
5) i dont know about this one because naturally aiming spells is instinctual for me (i have like 2000 games played and things like dark seer micro are inherently natural to me). but i should keep an eye out to see if i am missing any spells because the nuke is a skillshot and cant be casually thrown because you have such limited dps
6) im slowly getting better at farming ie zero downtime -> massive hidden advantage
7) this hero has like 40% winrate on dotabufff?? i think this hero must be insanely "marginal" as in every second of a game counts. compared to my 70% warlock (100s of games) where you can just casually rape impact, this hero you have to SQUEEZE some impact out of every splitsecond of the game. your spells are like support spells but you do zero damage, so you have to make up for it by figuring out how to do damage, but with 600hp you need to not die!! come to think of it, this hero must be similar to earth spirit (you need to play perfectly or you're a waste of space)
8) WHY ISNT THIS HERO IN ANY PRO GAMES ANYMORE? IS IT BECAUSE ZEUS ONE SHOTS HIM
----
tnx for the replies i have to go right now. my item choice looks fucked up yeah coz i was doing random shit and also i sell items at end of game often to buy force staff or shadowblade etc. or i buy hyperstone coz someone dropped rapier or the score is 10-30 and i just want to go dps and luck out or whateever.
also my "basic dota" should be pretty high level compared to a new player however i never practice 1 hero for long except for clock (dont need to practice with him lol but my friend forces me to play him) so finetuning a hero needs to be done def. ive gtg
