However, from experience we see how often group stage performance can differ from elimination bracket performance.

A single-elimination bracket following a thorough group stage is fine. Having a group stage leading into a double-elimination bracket has always seemed like overkill to me.
This pretty much.
I think (offline) tournaments should have some sorts of "balance", in the sense that most games should be about equally important, while minimizing the luck of the draw. So:
-Single-elimination only: Bad. I dont like that teams travel potentially a long distance, and might face a high chance of first round elimination in an unfavorable matchup. Also, having a bad day for whatever reasons means you're out.
-Groupstage into single elimination: My favorite, as long as the groupstage eliminates a reasonable amount of team (40-60%). Too few, and the groupstage becoms almost meaningless (and might even invite too lose games to tinker with their knockout stage bracket); too many and most matches become dead rubbers.
-Groupstage into double elimination: Same caveats as above. Might even prefer it when a lot of money is at stake, e.g. TI and mojors. Still I think that at least the last placed teams should go home after group stage.
-Double elimination only: Also quite ok.
It shows great adaptability, yes, but teams should have those things down by the time groups are over. The fact you got through to the play-offs and lost should not mean you get another chance... Integrity of the game and competition above all else.
