Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action.

Maclean's leaders election debate set for Aug. 6

The next Canadian Federal Election is tentatively scheduled for October 19, 2015

58%

No, but I will vote this year (28)

19%

No, and I won't vote this year (27)

18%

Yes, but I won't be voting this year (7)

Your vote: Did you vote in the LAST Canadian Federal Election?

(Vote): Yes and I will vote again this year
(Vote): Yes, but I won't be voting this year
(Vote): No, but I will vote this year
(Vote): No, and I won't vote this year

I’ve noticed the news has been servicing a lot of stories relating to the next Federal election. I realize that we are probably a couple of months away, but I thought I’d start a thread to discuss everything relating to our next general election.

The Conservatives Party of Canada is the governing party, which is lead by Stephen Harper. Currently the Conservatives Party has a majority; with more than half of the seats in the House of Commons.

This is going to sound harsh I hope the Conservatives get completely trounced. After some of the stuff they've been pulling the last few months, they deserve to lose. Any party that platforms on fear (to the point of using images from videos made by terrorist groups in ads) to cover up for the fact that they have massively mismanaged the economy is a party I strongly oppose. I honestly think Bill C-51 is going to backfire hard on them as people wise up to it (the same thing happened to Bill C-30. The whole "You're either with us or with the child pornographers" thing made them look awful and the new "You're either with us or you think terrorists are victims" thing will go poorly too). Their all-in on oil to grow the economy has already backfired on them incredibly hard. The partisan, tax payer-funded commercials that are constantly on TV need to stop also. Spending millions on ads telling Canadians things are going well and about programs that don't actually exist using misrepresented statistics when things are not going well is quite frustrating also (especially if that amount spent on ads truly is the over half billion spent on ads that Trudeau, Rick Mercer, and a bunch of other people have been saying. That amount spent on advertising combined with the insane number of cuts to actual useful programs is rather disturbing). It's frustrating watching what they are doing right now because it's blatantly obvious what they are going for with how much they're fear mongering and smearing the opposition but somehow there still are people who fall for it.

Sadly, of the three main party leaders, Mulcair, who has demonstrated the best leadership and would probably be the best leader, is probably not going to even come close to winning. He's done a great job as opposition leader the past few years.

Big news today from Parliament. The prime minister is proposing to expand and extend Canada's initial six-month military mission in Iraq and asking for support for an additional one-year air mission against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, also known as ISIS or ISIL.

Canadian Citizens living abroad typically vote (in advance) through their local Embassy or High Commision yes. If there is no Canadian diplomatic representative in your nation the UK version often performs the service. Really, a quick google search will tell you all that you need to know.

I'm sure as hell not voting Conservatives, Harper has been leading the country to a dark path and that has to stop now. I had some hope Trudeau would change things but he doesn't seem the leader type yet and I disagree with how he is going with certain policies, C-51 for example. NDP is the best bet I got so far because they aren't willing to throw the country under the bus to corporations or fear of terrorism.

Green Party doesn't exist

And OP, if you can add more info regarding all the parties, their leaders and their policies it would be really awesome and add substance to the thread when people can refer to it. If you need help I'm certain our wonderful Canadian TL'ers will contribute.

"Some of those who are elected to political office, in our Parliament, as our leaders should be ashamed today. Thirty-seven of them could not find it a high enough priority to be in the House of Commons when Parliament voted to extend and expand our mission against ISIL," he wrote.

"They could not prioritize their lives and schedules to be there when that most sacred trust — sending Canada's sons and daughters in harm's way — was decided. Shame on you," he continued.
Ex-General Rick Hillier

Regardless of your political leaning, I feel that it is unjustifiable to vote these MPs back into office again. Clearly they have little to no respect for the people of this country. Please remember them if you feel the same way.

Budget coming tomorrow will be a big deal. I suspect a lot of hand-waving and promises of sunshine and lollipops from the Conservatives while lots of rather dire cuts are made at the expense of younger people to keep their base of older wealthy baby boomers happy with income splitting and unsustainable tax cuts.

Boy I hope Trudeau smartens up and agrees to a coalition if the Conservatives get a minority. Enough is enough. Mulcair's already said he's up for it. Though Mulcair is the only leader who seems to be able to show anything resembling leadership of the big 3 parties.

Since I am from Quebec, it will most likely be NDP like last elections. Still, it would be nice to know more about what is going on because news seems to focus mostly on student strikes here.

I approve. Isis is a cancer on this world. Everyone should be destroying them in some way.

As for the election, as it stands I will be voting NDP however as of right now not alot of platform information is avalible on any party so my choice has a high liklyhood of changing.

why would he, the Princeling has decided the PMship is his birthright, after all he has the looks and the last name why shouldnt it be his. At least when Ignatieff was sprouting empty bullshit while getting outmaneuvered by Harper it was entertaining in a macabre kind of way. Sucks too, if the liberals could pull away some of the hard union stuff away from the NDP and the NDP could pull Trudeau's head out of his ass they'd probably get a lot done on a technocratic-leftie agenda.

Harper needs to go back to running the country off of opinion polls... that's what got him elected.

A part of me wants to see an NDP-Liberal merger, but I'm not sure the perils of a two-party system is worth it, just to have a new party in power or prevent a Conservative majority.

I generally hope for two things. (1) Less than 3-4 consecutive terms for any party. Comfort in power results in the party acting too boldly and developing issues of corruption. (2) A minority government that depends on more than two parties to pass bills.

They seem to be running the country purely on ideology at this point, and when actual polls indicate something they are doing is unpopular they hand wave those polls away and produce their own polls saying their view is popular, often going as far as saying "the vast majority of Canadians support it" when talking about their policies when the publicly available polls on issues indicate otherwise.
