I think this chapter proves, beyond all reasonable doubt, that Rokushiki and Haki are two entirely separate things.

Feels weird to me timing wise. Like I can't really see how Luffy's fruit's origin story matters for this arc unless it holds a powerup he activates pretty much right away. Other than that stuff like flashbacks on character powers don't really belong in a finale.

I also don't like origin of power stories on average, 90% of them end up diminishing the MC's achievements, turning him into some lucky guy who gets carried by his genes/powers.

He was CP9 I thought based on the reading.

However, I think the official translation is going to be fairly different this chapter. Some stuff looked pretty lost.

I inferred he was CP0 since he came together with the other CP0 people but I may be wrong as he could be just an underling

the timing might be questionable but if the only way oda could introduce the history was by utilising a specific character in the current war then ill take it.

He talks about Rob Lucci so that means it is CP9, no?

Just a theory, but I think that the gomu gomu no mi was Joy Boys devil fruit. I believe that shanks was originally heading to east blue to give Ace the fruit as it would be natural to believe Ace would inherit his father's will and:
a. inherit joy boy's will -OR-
b. be the prime candidate to become "the joy boy"
assuming that Gold D. Roger was himself either a or b but just "was around at the wrong time". As FATE would have it, Luffy ate the fruit instead.

The theme of luffy's "powers" when using the gomu gomu (bounce man, snake man, etc.) mimics what "guardian spirits" would look like in Japanese folklore. For those reason, again, another theory, I believe Joy Boy was actually from Wano and whoever possesses the gomu gomu no mi is I guess the "guardian" of Wano (or perhaps just "the guardian" irrespective of country)

Lets see how much, if any of this is correct. Excited for the flashback.
I really wanted a bigger opponent, like Nate Marquardt, or King Neptune, or Zeus, or Zeus and Fedor, or Fedor on Zeus's shoulders, and they can both punch but only Zeus can kick.

Maybe Wano has some connection to the ancient kingdom? Like some survivors formed it or they were an allied nation.

That seems to be given from what we already know. The Kozukis made the Poneglyphs and closed off Wano.

The question is basically:

Was the ancient kingdom good, and overthrown nefariously, or bad, and justly overthrown, just for its successor to be just as bad/worse?

I guess also there is the question of how all that ties in, but that is the BIG question.

I mean, clearly it was nefarious... you don't "cover up" justice... and murder however many people in the process.. not to mention wiping an entire culture/race from existence... i mean, give me one genocide that is justified...

Seems to me that the rubber rubber fruit would had been Joy Boy's fruit, otherwise why would Kaido randomly mention that Luffy is no Joy Boy and why would the fruit be so important as to be guarded by CP9/0.

that’s pretty much devil fruits in general. crocodile was the one who first said that the user only gets more powerful the more creative they become.

i will say though that i’m very disappointed in big mom mostly because she should soul reaping everyone in 1 hit KO’s

If Luffy's fruit has some additional meaning instead of being just a random devil fruit, I will be disappointed in the writing. When the series started, the Straw Hats were a bunch of random misfits and orphans and I liked it that way. Now they're "pirate royalty" with Sanji and Luffy, and even Luffy's Devil Fruit may carry some massive symbolic meaning? Sigh.

it’s always been a mildly interesting question though if you think about it.

why was shanks carrying around the fruit in the first place when his crew and roger’s crew thought devil fruits were too much of a liability? it’s doubtful, given his background, he just wanted to barter it

the fruit itself has always been interesting too as a paramecia class with a lot of logia properties

it also adds some possible context to why jesus burgess was interested in stealing the power given blackbeard’s extensive knowledge of fruits.

This is literally how every "child prodigy" story goes. I mean luffy is a 19 year old kid fighting against (and sometimes defeating) the most powerful adult 'supervillains' in the world. How do you explain that? In anime, this explanation inevitable (almost always) goes into family lineage and the realisation of "Well of course this kid can do all this at 19, look at his family tree, all monsters!".

In terms of the Devil fruit and all the rest, if you have time to re-read, and in future, look out for these three words: FATE, BELIEVE, DAWN. There has to be something 'fated' when it comes to the devil fruit(s). They're at the core of this story... they're literally what's special about OnePiece so why wouldn't it make sense for there to be a set of special DFs?

i get what herman is saying. it devalues the uniqueness of luffys character if in the end its revealed that his road to being pirate king was more destiny than effort.
if the gomu gomu fruit is just a seemingly weak paramecia then luffy overcame the odds by his own will, character etc.
if the gomu gomu fruit is suddenly some fated fruit that holds some huge secret and is pivotal to the collapse of the world government then luffy didnt overcome shit. he was always destined.
i agree with the sanji backstory as well tbh. i would have liked a normal backstory of him being from a different sea with a shit family but him being a prince of a notorious family was a pretty big ass pull for me

Luffy's story is part that, but its always also obviously been Iron Sharpens Iron and his ambition being so large that it set him on a path of ever increasing obstacles. He's been training in jungles and stuff since he could walk. Been training with his devil fruit since he was 7. Trained with 2 older kids who were also ambitious. Same is basically true for Zoro and Sanji. Its not a mystery they were the strongest East Blue crew when they trained harder, at a younger age, than anyone they were up against. When you compare their crew to Bellamy and the rest of the Mocktown pirates obviously they were outliers when it comes to the seriousness with which they take their craft.

I always thought that they were just a tradable power up to give characters a bit of fluff in fights. Tradable because it's a sea-faring world, which is also where their weakness comes into play.

I don't think they played a massive role overall, most logias are interchangeable with few exception (large scale attacks, elemental body that you need to elemental counter or haki to hit), most zoans are mainly battle fluff (look i attack with my neck instead of my hands now). Only paramecia become plot points quite often, since they are basically magic and can do whatever the author wishes.

So while I think that DFs enrich the OP universe and make it a bit more unique, you could likely tell the >90% of the story so far without DFs and nothing much would change.

On a similar note I think "work hard to realize your dreams" fits way better to OP than "I ate the Excalibur fruit and now I'm the chosen one". Imo between the D. and Luffy's father and grandfather there's more than enough stuff to justify why Luffy made it.

Usual shounen style. For some reason mangakas seem to think making their characters have special bloodlines, secret royalty, destined powers and suchlike make their characters more special and impactful, when really it just devalues their effort and achievements. Like every orphan in every shounen ends up being son of royalty/best knight/hokage/best mage/god/ hero/founder with amazing heritage and inheritance and it's real tiresome. I would had though Oda would be better than this but apparently not. Perhaps there is some sort of culture clash occuring here.
