Valve announced the details of the upcoming 2021 Dota Pro Circuit season. The 2021 DPC will be broken into 2 legs, each consisting of a regional league followed by a Major. The first set of regional leagues will begin on January 18th and continue til February 28th, with the first Major running from March 25th to April 4th. Due to the amount of time since the last DPC season, the Upper Divisions of the first set of regional leagues will have only 4 invited teams per region, with the remaining spots filled by qualifiers.

Man, those 4 invited spots for EU will be highly contested... Secret, OG, Nigma, Liquid ... or will another team take a spot?

Viking surely deserve to be in the conversation. I hope they receive one of them, it'd be quite the reward for their sticking together for so long.
China on the other hand the top 4 are practically uncontested. Elephant, LGD, VG, and Ehome.

I throw Alliance into the mix. But feel that with a new patch there can be a surprise team that figure something out before everbody else, with the new shards it would surprise me if some team would not come through from lower ranks in either China or EU.

I think Liquid, OG and Secret are pretty guaranteed, the only open slot is between Vikin.GG, Nigma and maybe Alliance...at least from my point of view. If they decide that the invite will be based on famousness, it will be Nigma. If it is on basis of the last big tournament(EPIC), it should be Vikin.GG. But guess, they will go for the team which secures more viewers i.e. Nigma.

Yeah I'd actually say Alliance has been more consistent than Nigma lately but maybe I just catch their good games xD

I think we discuss two different things. I thought we discuss team going to major, but seems it's direct invites. The post says recent form so I am thinking Viking gets invite. But with 12 teams in division I think we see all of these teams

Heck yes, about time. Prediction contest win #2

Well, the league is set to start on 18.1. Qualifiers should start maybe in a week or so!? So we are not far from the "first" high-class Dota of 2021!

Sea starts Monday. TnC, T1 and Fnactic direct invite plus team i forgot. The best teams play first and get more chances to qual.

I missread the Velve blog, as two times 12 teams. But apperently its the 4 invites + 12 teams to make 2 division of 8. So the first qual round is pretty damm good. With the top 4 teams going to Div 1 and the bottom to Div 2.

Very kind of Valve to announce the dates of their superspreader events with such considerable notice.

Please leave those comments in another thread, it's stupid!
Aside from that, halfway connected to invites and new DPC season I just read this:
Holy...

As always there are many complaints with things. The three main ones I have heard are: 1. How to get to tier 1 the first season was not handled well. Agreed. Suggestion to put DPC in a small non-profit for management seems sound to me. Valve doesn't want to manage it outside of TI and why should they then do it?
2. Pros will now be forced to play for most of the year. Good from a spectator point of view. A team wins TI and then you can't watch a game from them for 6 months. Not the best for spectator retention. It isn't even bad from a travel point of view for the players, there isn't a lot of travel during the week between cities.
They will also have a longer vacation after TI than most people get already, which is nice for them. The new terms are still so good that I wish I was good enough to go pro (if I could hit tier 1, else they are horrible).
3. Valve removed DPC money by having little happen during the summer/autumn. Agreed.

I have a rough time to understand Valves decisions regarding the Dota2 competitive Scene. They cashed in on all that money for a TI that couldnt happen due to covid from the Battle Pass , yet they come up with such a lackluster and half assed DPC Season. Instead of opening up the new year and the new season with a bang, with a sign of initiative, inspiration and commitment, they seem to try to get away with as little effort(also financial) as possible. This is disappointing to see. Lots and lots of Pro's and their environment seem to be not happy with how its handled, especially, as always, the tier 2 scene. Not enough games, all those non DCP tournaments sort of acting like hidden qualifiers, very volatile structure, where a couple of bad games can cost you your spot for a long time and a couple of other things.
And from a fan/spectator side of view disappointment as well. Some of Europeans best teams/players played for their DCP spots and ultimately deciding their competitive fate for the next roughly 6 month and those games dont even get an official coverage ...
Sorry for my rambling, but i had to get my anger and frustrations out. From my point of view, these are not good steps towards a future of Dota 2 as a competitive game.

It's definitely better than nothing. Also top tier pros have expressed last year that they felt that there are too many matches, so there's definitely reasons for keeping the number somewhat low and 16 teams per region gives some breathing room to t2 teams and matches them consistently against better opponents to learn from.
That being said there doesn't seem to be a monetary incentive outside of tourneys and exposure, which is disappointing. Part of the reason people wanted leagues was that other leagues pay players, enabling t2 teams to play as full time job. That doesn't seem to be in Valve's interest, which is absurd considering how common that critique is from pros/former pros and how much money Valve makes with BP. Paying ~120 pros a monthly income shouldn't be asking too much of a company that makes >100 million from purely digital purchases in a game every year.
