Day 5: Meme of the decade
Brutal, Savage, Rekt
Brutal, Savage, Rekt
This is one of the handful of memes that has made it outside of Dota, often seen on various social media. But how did the meme start? Well, we all know Paul "Redeye" Chaloner, esports host extraordinaire. He often likes injecting a bit of savagery whenever he's hosting and here, at the Frankfurt Major, we had just witnessed EHOME put on a clinic against LGD in the lower bracket, sending them out of the tournament. The GG has fallen, the camera focuses on Paul, and he says the classic "Brutal, Savage, Rekt".... but also "absolutely taken down", something most people tend to forget as it was somehow not in the meme.
A meme born four years ago but still as relevant as ever and has managed to become a global thing. That's definitely a good candidate.

Most Dota players, the one writing included, has a love/hate relationship with EternalEnvy and his 50/50 plays. He takes enormous risks which can result in him pulling off some of the craziest shit we've ever seen only to balance that out with failures of epic proportions, often just minutes later. When it works out, you're flabbergasted. When it doesn't... well you'll at least get a good laugh out of it. And that's the basis of the FiftEE/FiftEE meme.
When posting a FiftEE/FiftEE meme you have to include two scenarios, both plausible and not tell people the outcome. Do yourself a favor and go search "FiftEE/FiftEE" on Reddit. Far from all the hits are fails, there are some legit plays in there.
Another oldie on the list. This time it's Solo's infamous 322. For those unaware, in 2013 Solo wasn't the top playyer he was today. He was struggling on tier 3 teams such as Ice Climbers, Eclypsia, and RoX. And it's hard to make ends meet when there's no money coming in, even if you win. However, betting fraud is not the way to go. Solo had his girlfriend at the time bet against his team, RoX, and Solo threw the game. All for a measly $322. And that's where the meme comes from.
Let's be fair, while Solo has repaid his debt to the Dota community, this had to be in there. It's one of the iconic memes in our community and is, to this day, spammed more than any other meme in Twitch chat.
4. Pizza party!
Something a bit more recent to round off the list. The Pizza Party meme has "only" been around since the start of 2018 when Fnatic qualified for ESL One Katowice.
After a grueling best of five qualifier final, Fnatic — at that time led by EternalEnvy — just barely managed to edge out TNC to take that last spot in Poland. To celebrate, the team went out to get some pizza together. However, it wasn't to be a celebration. Instead, Ohaiyo was informed that he had been kicked from the roster to make room for Universe. As word of the kick got out to the community, there was a bit of shock but we, the Dota community, decided that instead of asking for players rights, we do what we do best: meme.
