Vladimir "No[o]ne" Minenko shared his impressions of the massive new 7.23 patch. Talking to Cybersport.ru two days before the second Major qualifiers, Virus.pro’s midlaner also briefly touched on their new roster synergy, impressions of the first DPC season events, CIS teams critique and shared lack of faith in the top teams who skipped the season’s start before they get their form back.
— After ESL ONE Hamburg 2019 Roman "Resolut1on" Fominok mentioned that you didn’t yet find synergy between the young and experienced players. Is it still the case?
— You can only answer that after seeing results. Right now everything about our game looks perfectly fine.
— Did you find chemistry outside of the game? Do the new players have any fear in front of you and Solo because of your star status and experience?
— I wouldn’t say that they are afraid or shy. It’s more likely to be about the significant difference in age, they are quite young, only 17 years old. I was the same 4-5 years ago, and experienced what it is like. It’s not always easy to find common interests outside of the game with that kind of difference in age.
— First two DPC events are done. Which team’s performance did you like the most?
— We’ve noted TNC to be a very good team a while ago, they just didn’t quite manage to prove themselves. Other than that I liked the way Vici Gaming played. Good and stable performance as usual. I also do like Evil Geniuses’ play.
— What is your opinion of the top teams that skipped the first Minor and Major? Are they ready to enter the season?
— It doesn’t matter what kind of star players a team has when they’ve been resting for four months and are now about to enter a completely new Dota. The game changed a lot, they will be just as confused as new players. They won’t get a hold of things right away and won’t end up in the top.
— Do you feel any pressure from the fans that expect VP to come back to your past form of top 1 in CIS and top 3 in the world?
— I’ve started feeling that some time ago, back with the previous roster. But with time I realized that it should in no way pressure me. That’s why I don’t feel any of that. I just want to play, enjoy the game and my life.
— Which CIS teams could compete with you in the coming Major qualifiers?
— Team Spirit, Gambit Esports and Natus Vincere are the teams that stand out in front of all others.
— CIS teams faced a lot of critique after their weak prformance on Minor and Majors. Do you think it is representative of the current level of play in this region, or were they just unfortunate?
— Regarding the region’s level of play… I don’t even know why these teams are being critiqued. They formed a few months ago and already reached a Major. You definitely shouldn’t critique them. Professional players also read comments and stress out. When people put their lives on the line, give their all and things don’t work out and later they read comments like “delete the game, you shouldn’t be playing it, it’s not for you”... It’s not right, to say the least.
I personally felt sorry for Gambit and Team Spirit at last Major, because you can see how hard they tried, but some things just didn’t work out, in some cases they were outplayed, in others they outplayed themselves… Well sorry, they are the same people as you who also play Dota days on end, give their all to the game. They are the same people as you are and I see no point in criticizing them.
— Do you read critiques in comments yourself? Does it anger you?
— It’s not like it angers me… Though many people write ugly things. I think it’s the norm. It pushes you to get better.
— Many top teams couldn’t reach finals of Open Qualifiers. Was that due to the new patch’s randomness?
— Well, It’s not only due to the patch, but 90% of it was. 10% were due to the players themselves.
— How do professional teams figure out the new patches?
— Usually it goes this way: as soon as the patch comes out everyone reads it and discuss some certain elements of it. When everyone is done with reading it, then we try some things out practically, in a lobby. After that we go to play pub games and scrims.
— What’s your impression of the patch?
— I really like that the game is renewed and you must look at it differently. It happens with any patch really, something changes and people find new tricks, start moving differently. Dota got stale in two years and everybody got tired of it. Valve wanted to give players time to think before the qualifiers, but the teams declined it. So Major qualifiers on Dota 3 just happen to be played in two days.
What I don’t like is that there is too much randomness in the game right now. Obviously there was randomness before, like runes, proc chances on items and passives and so on, but there never was a chance to get some items from neutrals. It’s a shock for me, Dota 2 looks like some kind of RPG. It will be balanced in time, but there is too much randomness right now. The ones who will get lucky and will take advantage of it will win, that’s all.
— Some casters and analyst say that this patch turned out good overall except for the neutral items. Do you agree?
— I can't judge it that way, because there are way too many new items. I didn’t even pay attention to other changes, because everything is all about the new items and hero changes. I’m not really noticing any of the hero changes yet, because the neutral items affect the game too much, making you think hard on your drafts and item builds.
— Did the patch affect your hero pool?
— It came out only three days ago, it’s too soon to talk about this. To figure it out you need at least six months for the teams to understand their ideas and refine strategies. Right now it’s simply a new game you’re having fun in, running around, trying to find some tricks. I can’t say that it affected me personally. It affected everybody in general.
— Did you have time to play the new heroes?
— I didn’t play them because I don’t see the point. I simply play against them in pubs and get upset every time because people use imbas. New heroes always come out with imbalanced skills. They are too strong, do too much damage, absorb too much damage, skills cost too little, cooldowns are too short. They are completely imbalanced and I see no point in using them because it’s too easy. When you’re a professional you can win any game of Dota with that stuff.
