Daryl Koh "iceiceice" Pei Xiang talked to Cybersport.ru about his team’s preparation to this Major, Team Liquid replacing Lasse Aukusti "MATUMBAMAN" Urpalainen and why he prefers to avoid media and press. Fnatic’s offlaner also mentioned that he is disappointed with the direction Valve chose for Dota 2 development.
— I’ve been hunting for your interview for five Majors now, but every time you declined. What changed now?
— Nothing changed, they forced me!
—You don’t like media that much?
— It’s not about that. When I agree to take an interview, suddenly there comes so much of them and their questions always repeat. Eventually, after yet another talk you just get tired from repeating the same things.
—That’s why you chose to completely avoid press?
— Yes, that’s what happened last year. I think I haven’t given a single interview for the whole year, I was hiding from everyone. But now I told Fnatic that if the organization needs this, then I will agree to talk to the press. I’m ready to do anything for the team.
— Let’s move to more serious stuff. Last year you’ve been banned on Twitch for a racist remark regarding your own name. Since then there has been a lot of more serious scandals. Do you think this is a professional scene issue?
— It’s all about the offlane. Who participated in those scandals? Ivan Borislavov "MinD_ContRoL" Ivanov, Bai "rOtK" Fan, Carlo "Kuku" Palad, Sébastien "7ckngMad / Ceb" Debs, me… we’re all offlaners
—You’ve talked about thinking of taking a break after TI multiple times now, but every time you got an offer and continued to play. What should happen for you to really stop playing Dota?
— I will need to win TI. If that will happen, then maybe I will take a break for a few months. Seriously though, I am sure that I will stop playing only if I get bored.
—You’re not bored at all right now?
— No, not bored. But I am disappointed with the direction Valve chose for the game’s development. I wouldn’t like to talk about it, it’s complicated.
— Some time ago you complained about the game getting too simple and suggested to make it more difficult instead to scare kids away. Any ideas of how to do that?
— First of all, it would be good to remove the timings for neutral stacking. It’s really weird that you can calculate the exact second when you need to hit a creep. Small things like that make the game a lot easier, because you don’t need to remember anything else.
Also, I would like to give heroes their old image. All these cosmetics sometimes hinder the game. Sometimes when I look at a hero I can’t tell who it is right away, and I am a professional player, this shouldn’t be happening to me.
— I thought you meant something about a different type of difficulty. Like having more heroes like Meepo. Would you like those kind of changes?
— I wouldn’t say that Meepo is a difficult hero. He is just different from others. If you’re playing strategies like StarCraft, then playing a pack of Meepos is normal for you.
— How did Fnatic prepare to this Major?
— We had a two-week bootcamp right before the tournament. I am sure that we will show a better game here than in Paris, because we were truly preparing for this event. I hope it will help!
— You already qualified for TI. Does this mean EPICENTER is simply a battle for fame?
— And for money (laughs).
— Team Liquid replaced MATUMBAMAN. What do you think of this?
— I don’t really understand why the fans took this news so lightly. When Jacky "EternaLEnVy" Mao kicked Nico "Gunnar" Lopez [t.n. after qualifying with him to Paris Major], everyone was talking about it. How does this happen? This already happened at some point when Adrian "Era" Kryeziu got kicked from his team, writing this off as team chemistry issues. I don’t understand why is it so quiet now.
— Is Aliwi "w33" Omar a fitting midlaner for the team ?
— I don't know what kind of player w33 is. I don’t care, we never really crossed paths. He performed well in Team Secret, and kept playing well after. That’s all I know.
— MATUMBAMAN could run a Broodmother. Do you think lacking the ability to last pick “the spider” hinders the team a lot?
— I think Amer "Miracle-" Al-Barkawi can play Broodmother no problem. And w33 will probably do fine, he does play Visage and Meepo. I don’t think MATUMBAMAN departure affected Liquid’s hero pool at all.
— If you would have to play against Liquid, do you now consider them more dangerous?
— I wouldn’t say they got any more or less strong. But it did become different.
— What is the weirdest thing you had time to see in Russia?
— When I went for a walk, I saw people lying in the grass in the middle of a street for some reason. I was very hot and sunny, so I didn’t understand what that was about. Also everyone kept talking to me in Russian, maybe they were asking for money. That was kind of weird.
— What is the coolest thing in Russia?
— I don’t know. Probably borscht. I always loved borscht.
— You’ve been mentioning that you looked into forming a team with EternaLEnVy. Would you now invite MATUMBAMAN as well?
— Yes, that year after TI we really did think about forming a team. But I didn’t go through with it, because it wasn’t the most convenient choice for me. I would love to play with MATUMBAMAN, but then we would have to get someone else, someone young, to carry us. Me and Matu wouldn’t pull this off on our own.
