Wins ESL One Genting
Although it was easy to miss, due to all controversies surrounding the tournament, ESL One Genting had some actual Dota games going on. Some good Dota games too.
Right from the start the tournament was stacked with great teams as 6 of the 8 highest ranked teams, according to DPC points, attended the tournament. It's therefore no surprise that these were the teams who managed to qualify for the arena stage of the tournament, with Secret and Liquid (the two highest ranked teams) winning their groups.
Day one in the Arena of Stars featured EG vs. VP, a matchup that has shown to be problematic for the top dogs of the CIS scene. Today was not different as EG crushed VP 2-0 off the back of some amazing Lyncantrophe performances from Fear, promting a passionate tweet from Sumail. EG's bliss turned out to be short lived as they ran into the power house that is Team Liquid in the following round and was given absolutely nothing for free. In game 2 of the series it took EG 18 minutes to get a single kill.
In the other side of the bracket we saw Newbee dominate VG in the first round, which is nothing new seeing as how Newbee's biggest opponents has all come from outside of China. They now had a gauntlet ahead of them. Between them and the trophy stood the two top ranked teams of the DPC. Fortunately for Newbee Secret was unable to field their best squad as FATA- was hospitalized due to health issues.
While Secret was higher in the rankings Newbee had their sight set on their biggest opponents over the last months: Team Liquid. The teams have clashed a lot of times and Newbee had not won a single one of those series. This final is where that all changed but it didn't come easy. Newbee took down Liquid in an incredible 5 game series that has to be seen.
Lock Progression For The International 2018As we get closer and closer to TI8 teams also get closer and closer to locking an invite. In order to keep track of how close a team is to getting an invite we have created a quick tracker for you, inspired by Knoxville.
In the below table you will be able to see how many percent of the DPC has to be distributed, optimally, for a team not to qualify for TI8. Once the counter reaches 100% there are no longer enough points left in the DPC pool to knock them out of the top 8. If you would like to check our math here's the google spreadsheet used.
In order to calculate this we made 4 assumptions:
- We don't know tiebreaker rules, so added +10pts to surpass.
- There will be 8 invited teams, no regards for region.
- Players will not switch teams.
- Points will be distrubted optimally.
We also chose to focus on the top 4 teams, as the current percentages of the teams below them is so low.
