Following the Winner’s Ceremony, VP had a brief press conference during which questions for all 5 players were opened to the floor, below is the transcript and following the conference, we managed to get Solo for an interview.
About the series, we wanted to ask, during Game Two, after getting teamwiped twice, did you maybe get a bit of trauma from Kiev or did you feel like, “it doesn’t matter, we’re the best team and we’re going to win”?
Solo: I felt a bit of trauma, yes, but my teammates felt very confident and they thought we just need to take it easy and farm a little bit. After RAMZES bought back, we just wanted to fight, fight, fight. It was a good decision to buy back and protect Roshan, not letting them take Aegis, that was one of RAMZES-God’s ideas.
For the next question, now that you’ve won the first Major of the Dota Pro Circuit, do you feel like you’re the best team in the world? You beat Newbee, you beat Secret, you beat Liquid, who else is there that you think is really strong?
No[o]ne: Actually, we were the best team even without this. *laughs* It’s a joke, just a joke. *laughs
So yesterday, we talked to No[o]ne and you said that you still haven’t beat EG and that you really wanted to beat EG. Do you still feel that strong sense that you want to beat them?
Solo: Of course, it’s EG. We lost to them a lot of times so it’s kind of-
Lil: Revenge. It’s kinda cool to see Arteezy BabyRage. *everyone laughs*
Now that you’ve won this, you’ve got a lot of point on the Dota Pro Circuit, are you gonna be more selective about which tournaments you play now or are you still gonna try to get to every event that there is?
Solo: I think we give priority to the Majors, and we probably play some Minors just to get the points for TI y’know. It depends on the Top 8 teams for the points, I guess.
There is a question here relating to the previous one. You already said that you might play some Minors but that you’ll mostly play Majors. I interviewed EternaLEnVy a little bit earlier and he said that Major tournaments don’t feel really important, so what do you think about that?
Solo: Of course they’re really important, I would say they’re the most important tournaments of the season that you have to win to be invited to TI because they give more points.
Lil: Maybe he said so because it’s hard for him to qualify to Majors. *everyone laughs*
No[o]ne: I have a question, how did you guys do?
Congratulations to the winning team and thanks a lot.
Firstly, thanks for taking the time to do this interview and also congratulations on winning ESL One Hamburg, and now you’re on top of the Dota Pro Circuit Leaderboards in terms of Qualifying Points. The next tournament you will be playing in is DotaPit and Valve have announced a new patch. Are you perhaps preparing anything special at the moment as far as the new patch and DotaPit goes?
No, we know nothing about the patch right now so we’ll just make strategies after the patch is release and we will try to do our best. After DotaPit, we will go and have a bootcamp so we can study the patch and try to figure it out.
Some people in the community have been saying that Valve might be releasing something similar to back in Dota 1 where you would have a tournament version and a new patch version. If they do introduce this new tournament version and it’s going to be played on DotaPit, would you prefer that?
Uh, I guess that when they release a new patch, it automatically goes to the main client now. So you can’t really do that I think. But about whether I would prefer it, I think that we are all tired of this patch, especially pro players, because we play many matches. We need this new patch and we’re all waiting for it so we’ll want to play DotaPit on the new patch and we think it’ll be more interesting and might bring more viewers on Twitch. It should be something really cool.
So Game 3 against Newbee, you last picked Broodmother mid for RAMZES and Newbee responded with kaka playing Earthshaker mid, what went through your head, were you expecting it at all?
Actually, we were thinking about it but we didn’t expect them to actually do it nor that they would pressure us so much during the early game. They set up good lanes against us and they went to our safelane with Monkey King and Bane and we were Disruptor, Spiritbreaker and Bloodseeker. Our last pick Broodmother is actually one of the strategies that we had been preparing for this tournament. RAMZES is confident on the hero so it’s like Earthshaker can farm a lot but Broodmother can outfarm him a little bit later and we can get Rosh, we can push, we can do a lot of different things with the hero. Newbee were playing quite well but our strategy was working a little bit better.
So about the new patch, we already asked No[o]ne yesterday about what sort of buffs and nerfs he wants to see and he said he wants Earthshaker and KOTL and Force Staff to get nerfed, but what about you?
I feel like this patch is very variable. There are many heroes and strategies that can be played but there are still some overpowered heroes that need to be nerfed and there are some weak heroes, supports, like Crystal Maiden, Warlock and many others that could be buffed. There are also other heroes like Enchantress and Venomancer who are kinda OP but I just want to see some fixes, some buffs and nerfs here and there. As I heard, they’re probably adding one new talent, maybe they’ll change the map a little bit because overall the winrate on Radiant is higher, something like 65-35. I don’t really know what they will do but I would like to see two new heroes and they looked amazing in the trailer.
You just talked about Radiant and I think on Twitter, the statsmen like Noxville and Nahaz have said that during this tournament both VP and Secret like picking Radiant a lot so what’s the reason for that?
It’s really about the team, As far as I know, Liquid prefer Dire because when they have priority they always take first pick and so they have to play Dire a lot because their opponents prefer Radiant so they feel comfortable playing on Dire. We like second pick and we like to play Radiant so if our enemies choose first pick, we choose Radiant so we get second pick and Radiant and that’s a lot more comfortable for us. We also like playing the laning stage on Radiant. It doesn’t look like Radiant really has an advantage but the stats tell us that Radiant is really better.
As a captain, how big do you think the influence of having the coach during the draft is? What changes for VP with ArtStyle helping you?
I think we need to play more tournaments to get some statistics about it but I think it’s a very good change because sometimes you plan strategies but when you go into the booth you maybe forget some picks and bans and your coach can tell you what to do. This was an issue for us at the Kiev Major when we were planning to do a different draft for Game 5 against OG, using different heroes. It was working but it wasn’t our heroes and it wasn’t really our strategy.
Speaking of the Kiev Major, how satisfied are you now that after coming so close back then, you’ve finally won a Major?
Yeah, really happy but there are 11 Majors this season and they’re not as big as the previous Majors but it’s still our first big win and we won The Summit and got a lot of 2nd places but I guess we deserve it because we were training a lot for this tournament. Still, though, the most important tournament for me is TI and it’s the event which fits my dream to win a such a huge tournament.
Before Kiev, some casters and players have talked about the way you play position 5 like how sometimes you carry 11 healing salves late game. So how did you come up with this idea?
Sometimes it’s happened to me where I find that we don’t have healing items like Mekansm or Headdress or HotD and no healing spells and when you push, you come to the enemy tower. They use spells to push out the lane so you have to heal and, it’s still good. It heals you for 400hp in 10 seconds so it’s quite good, especially since the changes to towers not cancelling salve.
A lot of people have also noticed that the last few months, sometimes it’s you drafting and sometimes it’s RAMZES instead. How do you decide who gets to draft when and what are the differences between the way both of you draft?
Oh, I was just taking a break after TI and I was on vacation and RAMZES was still playing so he had ideas and we just let him pick. We did the same thing last year where he would draft for one month and then I draft again. Now, I’m playing a lot so I’m drafting again.
Well, I guess we have to cut it short there but thank you for the interview and again, congratulations on your win.
*N.B. The interview had to be cut short because venue staff needed us to vacate the venue at the time of the interview.
