Introduction
I’m finding writing this blog is incredibly healthy for my mindset: I ignore all my teammates when I analyse my games and I focus on what I can do better (although I do take jabs at some of them for things I find questionable). I take this knowledge into the next game and play with a positive mindset with the objective of improving. It is incredibly helpful as you are not in the game yourself but you view it as information to help you improve instead of trying to win. Also, being on holidays without the stress of university is nice; I was always grumpy playing dota after classes or study sessions as a result of stress. I encourage people to try this out!
I’ve played a lot more ranked games and every time I play a core hero, the team wins. I feel more comfortable being the person who controls the tempo of the game but more importantly, I like having the capacity to carry the team in the mid and late game. You can view my profile on dotabuff here:
http://www.dotabuff.com/players/137599133
I went from below 2.9k to around 2966 now. I’m quite pleased. I hope to be able to hit 4k but this will ultimately require me to improve my individual skill and state of mind.
A big thanks to all the viewers and people who comment! It has given me more motivation to write this, especially because of people who have enjoyed reading it.
Initially this post was going to analyse two games because I thought one of them was not worth writing too much on but it turns out, this game was worth the watch to learn. Note: this game demonstrates why I am at 2.9k MMR for sure. Ranked Game 2 – Ugly Green Fish Man
Mr. Oracle wants to try a carry build; whatever not my problem. Given that he has told the team this, we have our 3 cores now. I would like to offlane solo if possible to milk levels and stack ancients. I feel very confident with my offlane play because it’s all about milking as much as you can and staying on the edge of safety. Tidehunter is fun; I recall in the past, there was a lion – faceless void dual lane… Well I dove to a T2 to first blood the void and my team yelled at me for feeding; IT’S WORTH MAN. Or is it? I don’t know…
My first impression after seeing our team: I fucking hate this game so much.
Ancients. Stacking. Win. I want a blink dagger and a catch up mechanism.
In hindsight, I should have went straight to the safe lane and let the broodmother solo lane. I have no presence here; I’m just a meat bag. If I was solo, whole other story. But seriously, those two imbeciles who picked after my core pick are schmucks. Incredibly irritating how selfish people can be; do people who play want to win or not? Oh and the broodmother is the gyrocopter from the previous game. I was quite pissed off but I focused on what I could do.
So this lane we have an Oracle/Viper VS Sand King/Bounty hunter lane. I’m a tidehunter; how are those two going to kill me and contest my pulls if I were to act as a support here. I could just walk up to them and anchor smash, bam, where is your damage now? I have a viper and oracle to back me up. Oracle can purge someone to prevent their auto attacks (bounty hunter most likely) and viper can slow the crap out of someone. If I get gush instead of kraken shell as well, this would be troublesome for them especially if we had gotten sentries as well. This was an ideal situation and I did not do this. Oh well.
So here I am stacking ancients and getting experience from the offlane. Oh boy. We are getting ganked. I didn’t feel like I was in danger. Also I have a stout shield – I’m not sure how effective this would be and I think this is a questionable purchase. If I had to simulate this gank now, I think ogre magi should be initiating on the broodmother, followed by the sand king stun and PA jumping on the broodmother. However, if this was going to happen, I would have walked over to the broodmother and anchor smashed to reduce the damage of their entire team if possible.
This gank will be examined for how many mistakes we all made. So how did this gank turn out?
Sand king initiated and landed a double stun.
I was wondering where the dagger went and what it hit. The PA misclicked and a spiderling died. WHY DID YOU KILL HER BAA-BIES (if you guys watched Sing’s stream, read it as he would say baby)?
Ogre stunned me. WHAT? Weirdest gank I’ve experienced. I have anchor smash, a stout shield, kraken shell. Good luck killing me.
I forgot to anchor smash boys. Did it late.
Ogre died. How did we even do this? It does not look like a clear “Fails of the Week” moment but it demonstrates to me how much miscommunication occurred in the enemy team and how they failed to understand broodmother was the target with the highest chance of success. I damaged him earlier with the anchor smash, the spiderlings chased and broodmother nuked him. First blood not deserved. Mistakes were made.
Also our net worth. How did this even happen? I don’t understand… This game is just weird so far.
Throw your boat dude. Would have killed the sand king and we could have doved with the spiderlings.
This was hilarious. I’ll just let you guys guess what happens next.
Alright so back to my gameplay now. These two incidents in this game made me laugh. It was worth it to lose this game to see all this.
At this point, we got a tier 1 tower. I’m incredibly poor and under-leveled. I bought no wards this game because, well you know what I wanted to say.
So what I ended up doing was stacking the ancients in the down time. What is interesting here is it took me 4 fountain trips to clear most of them and I was 100 gold away from my blink dagger. It was worth it as it was a catch up mechanism and my blink timing would have been 14-15 minutes into the game. My team took trades in fights. My team has a gold lead.
I TPed in to save the viper. Biggest mistake of my life. I should have let him die and finish my blink. I die instead and I’m set back a few hundred gold. Not good. I wasted ravage as well. In hindsight, if I let viper die, and finished my blink, our next team fight would have been easily won with my ravage. It was unfortunate that I was in a bad mindset this game. The question here is was it worth it to save the viper in exchange for my ravage? I definitely think this was not a good call.
Yay I got my blink dagger. Late, but what can do you in a game where everyone else on our team wants farm. If I had ravage here, my God would someone die a terrible terrible death. In hindsight this was definitely a game I could have won. I could have controlled the tempo of the game and definitely deliver with big ravages. I had a defeatist mindset in this game and wanted it to be over as soon as possible. I believe firmly if I had given it my all, irrespective of the team, we would have easily won this off the back of my ravages and kunkka’s skillset. Our team fight presence would be incredibly scary to deal with and if I had tried to communicate with the team to try smoke ganks and rotations, we would have the game completely in our control and gotten away with our greedy choices.
My team is in the middle of nowhere and died. I had ravage but seriously, I can’t even enter this fight given how far I was from it. I did not understand why they were there in the first place. Looking on the map, no one was defending top, mid was missing and bottom had no one either. This was not a good idea at all and this cost us.
I just pinged it out and our two teammates just died. Broodmother casually pushing…
The recurring theme this game is me obtaining my farm from the ancients. I restricted myself to this mindset. In hindsight, I should have also been farming our jungle as well. Tidehunter has the capacity to do so and this would have gotten me more items in the long run. Furthermore, I could have used this farm I have gotten now for wards. This was required this game.
Vision was of utmost importance. I understood my team had horrible map awareness so I should have definitely put my gold to wards. There was no excuse not to have wards (I was a bit vindictive this game… I wanted them to suffer I suppose). We were ahead in farm and net worth before this abysmal outcome.
More importantly, my ravage. I have not utilised it once since my attempt at saving viper. Ravages were crucial this game and I did not deliver on this. I felt like I could not. When I wanted to, the team was diving in no man’s land, or I blow it on trying to save an ally.
Communication was also severely lacking. Compared to my skywrath game, I hardly directed the flow of the game by asking my team mates to do certain things or to roll with me in a gank. I did not even smoke gank and played ‘balls to the wall’ greedy. I felt completely miserable this game. I question my blink rush now. Was it worth it? Did I get the mileage out of it? Definitely not. I had not use a single game changing ravage. Wards, smokes, more levels on gush and my presence in the tri-lane would have made the game incredibly different. I was the variable that could have controlled the game for my team and directed their actions. They had the farm lead and did well in the laning phase. I on the other hand was a dirt poor tidehunter focused too much on getting my blink while ignoring the need for wards, smokes and ganks.
My game impact is pathetic. I’m 0 1 1. I have focused too much on farming and did nothing. We all are doing solo things. There would be more analysis but hey, all I had to do is try for rotations and ganks. I didn't. AFK FARM.
Ravaged used. Got 2 pick offs. Then I died. No sentries. Not a single drop of detection on the team. I should have been buying it. The team fight started perfectly with a good ravage but there was a lack of a boat… I anchored smashed and then tanked a lot of damage. I walked out to die to the bloody bounty hunter.
The remainder of the game was just stomp after stomp. We played “solo” this game; none of us communicated much and we just walked around on our own only to get picked off 1 by 1. My end score is 0 5 5; absolutely trash. I have a bloody ravage! We didn’t team fight much, we just died being picked off and not acting as a team.
Summary
I needed to just think “Whatever. Does not matter what we had picked. If we out-greed them and get away with it, we could easily win.” That’s exactly what happened; all of our heroes got the farm and a decent amount of gold. These are the list of things I think I should have done or do better in future games.
1. Does not matter that we have 5 cores, just play.
I was incredibly mad. This was not the right mindset to have. If we’re better than them, then we can win with the weirdest of drafts and the weirdest of plays. I needed to keep a positive mindset this game and try my best. Writing this made me remember the tri-lane sing did… with his stack: gyrocopter, luna and sniper. That was hilarious.
2. Leadership and communication.
Tilting this game was my mistake. I needed to take command of the team and explain what we needed to do and what we ought not to do. We have a greedy lineup (well the team wanted to play greedy anyway). If I acted as the one person on the team who was calm and collected, I could have directed my team’s actions in a way that we could have won. The absolute lack of any team fights this game and everyone doing their own little thing led to us being picked off one by one. This coalesced into a snowball and we could not fight back.
I could have made the calls when to do things and when not to do things. I didn’t. If we had pressed the farm advantage we had and team fight them with it, we could have easily won! Why didn’t I capitalise on that?
3. Stop being a whiney bitch.
Well not necessarily but I should have just taken my role with a grain of salt. Instead of accepting my mindset of playing another core, I should have transitioned into a support and tri-laned with the safe lane to get my levels and experience. Fuck that I am the 5th position support again but on a bloody tidehunter. If I had warded, bought sentries, bought the smokes, and guided my team instead of playing “solo” we could have definitely won this game.
4. Using my assets on the hero
I had a blink. I have a ravage. Why am I not using my assets? I need to exploit the advantages I have. Communicating with the team to use it was also crucial but I did not do that.
This game came down to decision making which was severely lacking. This was an easily won game if I had did everything I had described here in hindsight, even if the other four were doing weird things. I don’t know what else I could say about my play this game other than support immediately at the beginning. Then this would have turned into a similar analysis like my skywrath game on what I should do as a support.
Hindsight: what I should have done at the beginning.
As tidehunter, I could tri-lane with the oracle and viper. This lane may be untraditional but I think it would have worked. I could have focused on pulling and milking exp, while also stacking the other dire camps; I could have cut the trees and use gush to stack 2 camps at once. None of the heroes on our team could clear those camps easily except for me, the tidehunter. This would have secured our safe lane and I could have secured a blink anyway instead of stacking ancients. I could have asked the broodmother to try and devote some spiderlings to stacking the ancients. With pulls and stacks, our efficiency would have been greater than the enemy team. Writing this makes me feel so disappointed that I didn’t do that… the game would have been so much easier. The regrets. I definitely think even though this game sucked, I learned a lot re-watching it and writing about it.
Some more comments
I don't know what else I could have done this game. If I did support, I could have critiqued that. Farming issues this game were pretty obvious in the sense I was inefficient. I felt this game was not decided on raw skill but the ability to play as a team and communicate. There were so many wrong decisions and choices I made this game that I think I've focused on all the biggest ones.
I am embarrassed that I played this awfully and this game is probably the worst game I've had. I've had feeding games where I've done better.
Edit: I need to proof read. There are errors.

Nice analysis of your game, I think it always help's to go back over a game when you are no longer 'tilting' or just caught up in the game. Also to your point of keeping a level head and not getting into the defeatist mindset I think that is so important and it is so much more fun to play with and you end up enjoying the game more as well.
Reading this makes me want to try tidehunter.

If you plan on getting Kraken Shell, don't buy a stout since damage block doesn't stack. As soon as you get level 2 shell, your stout gets completely useless. It's 250 gold better spent elsewhere in my opinion.
Interaction at level 1 shell is if the stout procs (60%), it blocks 20 dmg. If it doesn't then you block 10 dmg with kraken shell. So you pay 250 gold for 60% to block 10 damage. Stout on Tide with level 1 shell is the same effect as a stout on a ranged hero.

so it is very important to keep the same analytical mindset when you play more games. this is ur 2nd game, you're learning a lot. can you make sure you learn just as much by your 100th game, your 1000th game? Most likely no. But you have to try

it actually really doesn't matter if you have 5 cores, as long as you know who to prioritise the farm and how to distribute it well. and for someone to make the sacrifice to buy wards/courier (usually it's you)
i've had 5 cores so sometimes (planned or otherwise) i go for gyro, riki or even PA support. pretty useful individually. and they can all transit to late game if you win teamfights by sacrificing a bit in the early game. so the lesson is, be greedy but reasonably greedy. think of the team as a whole instead of just yourself.

I highly doubt I can learn as much by that time. But I can say definitely there's always something to learn even if there are diminishing returns. Think of graduate students who do a Ph.D. for a certain field: they learn all they can for the area of research they do and then hit a wall. They keep pushing to discover something new from the information they create from experiments and hypotheses.
I think if we look at professional players, they started somewhere higher than me of course. They build a bank of knowledge at the beginning and at the peak of their performance, they're still learning or doing new things, but not at a rate at which they did initially.

I enjoy these a lot
I just started to play tide again after maybe a year of not playing the hero and I'm really enjoying the games so far. His ability to clear ancients is something to be used during the entire game for sure. Keep it up!
|
I usually don't even bother trying to clear an ancient stack with level 2 Anchor Smash. Given no lane priority, I would instead stack ancients once, then stack and clear a medium camp, then return to clear an ancients triple stack at level 5.

i understand what ur trying to do with this blog but there are other things u need to improve on before all ur theorycrafting and analysis come to anything. such as not being lvl 4 at 8 mins in as a tide against melee heroes. what the hell, their only range hero is invoker who went mid. how do u get zoned out of exp by ogre and pa? my guess is u went full retard on stacking ancients and actually missed out on a lot more exp in lane. you don't stack ancients when u can get exp in lane. u do it when the creeps are under their tower. this is just one thing that i noticed from the screen shots, u really need to learn how to lane. there are probably others as well. i think u'd be getting more/better help if u'd post the replays as well.

You have my dotabuff profile and the match ID.
As for the rest of your comment, you need to understand I did not want to hinder the broodmother's presence as a solo laner. It's clear that you did not read everything as I did specify I went "full retard" stacking the ancients and in hindsight I should have gotten level 3 and went jungling via the medium camp or do a tri-lane with my other lane. I should have mentioned that. Laning? Obviously, if I sat in the lane, I would have experience. I did not. I focused more on stacking and coming in to get a bit of experience while not significantly hindering the broodmother. I didn't think I needed to write that broodmother would rather have solo experience.
My ass moment now: if you want to criticise my games, at least read the entire blog. You can't make an informed response without considering the entirety of what I have written.
Other than this, thank you for all the suggestions on what else I could have done, it's been very helpful.

What do you want me to do? Tell the broodmother to fuck off? :/ You need to understand that what ever I say in the game, some people do not listen and this broodmother randomed last. These stubborn people cannot be dealt with so I had to deal with it.

That's assuming the Tide (no offense) is going to do better with the farm. Remember they are at equal skill it doesn't matter if it's at 1k or 2k. You do what you think is best for the team, and roll with it.

None taken; exactly how I treat the game anyway. We're near the same MMR so our skill level should be quite similar.

I like reading your blog, it's really nice.
I'm surprised you didn't actually analyze your hero select and instead just focused on analyzing the game itself. Yes you're going to win some games with 5 cores or something retarded even at 5k but the hero you pick is honestly super important to the game and sometimes you just have to ask yourself whether the hero you ended up with was the hero you needed. Not to say that the game wasn't winnable but you're not doing yourself any favors when their team composition is actually good and yours isn't.
Anyways good luck, work hard and 4k outta be easy!

Thank you! I'm currently trying to focus on a few heroes only. At the moment, I have
Carry - Slark Mid lane - Razor Support - Skywrath mage Offlane = Tidehunter
You are correct in saying how hero picks are incredibly important but I think many others have also specified that execution is all that matters at my level of play. I'll definitely keep that in mind

At the moment, I have Carry - Slark Mid lane - Razor Support - Skywrath mage Offlane = Tidehunter You are correct in saying how hero picks are incredibly important but I think many others have also specified that execution is all that matters at my level of play. I like this idea and I wish you luck with it I've got myself into the habit of (after finishing blink) after ravaging somewhere on the map and hopefully killing 1 or 2 heroes, I'll go back to ancients and farm them or the lane again if its pushed up and is free till ravage is back off cd and then I'll go help the team again with another ravage.
Obviously you have to be aware of what is happening on the map and carry a TP if you need to help your team before ravage is up but it's a great way of making sure you're using the resources available to you on the map and allows you to quickly get the items needed for a refresher. Best of luck!
